HISTORIC PRESERVATION
In the mid-19th century, the Gaffer District, surrounded by hills and railways, served as the center for a large lumber region which ran along the Chemung River. In 1868, Corning's famous glass industry, originally Brooklyn Flint Glass, now Corning Incorporated, was born. Now over 150 years later, the company remains enormously instrumental and committed to the development of the city and its downtown area. Most original structures here were made of wood, but several disastrous fires resulted in new buildings made of brick and stone. The devastating floods following Hurricane Agnes in 1972 led to a restoration program highlighted by the nationally acclaimed restoration of historic Market Street within the Gaffer District.
